Zappa did this with the Grand Masters series....you buy the lot, THEN he releases all the albums in a box set with an extra disk...the cheek of it!
First time was at SJSU in 1980, they played to a handful of people on Halloween in our Student Union ballroom. Great show, even if few were there. On the other hand, I was devasted because I'd been asked to cook for the band, but not told Andy was a vegetarian and made beef burgandy. If I had only known... sniff.

Second show was a year later at California Hall in SF with Wall of Voodoo opening. There the band all dressed in sea faring fashions... I think Big Express was either out or they were previewing some of the material. Festive fun all around, if not a bit fuzzy in the memory department.
Does anybody know what's going on with Andy Partridge? The two new installments of Fuzzy Warbles were supposed to be out by now, but when you go to Ape Records web site, they're not listed in the catalog. The stuff that is listed all says "CATALOG SUSPENDED" whatever that means, and you can't order anything. And there's been no news posted since August 11.

Somewhere rolling around in my skull there's this memory of reading a report about a band called the TrashCan Sinatras (had some success in the early nineties tho didn't make much of a splash in the US) and how they recorded a version of Farmboy's Wages (probably my most favorite XTC song).
"Yacht Dance" would probably make a good waltz.
And, of course, Ruben Blades' cover of "The Man Who Sailed Around His Soul" is a a Salsa.

Hot off the WIRES... drums and wires (rimshot please):

Who could have foreseen it?

Like the proverbial dark horse, it seems that San Francisco's most
proficient and aesthetically and aurally pleasing XTC cover band, Clan
MacPartridge, is quickly narrowing the gap in the final hours before the New Hampshire primary, and is riding comfortably on a vibrant and enthusiastic groundswell of support.

According to Fox News, the reason for this amazing surge in popularity is due to The Clan's considerable rally at their most recent public appearance, in which 84% of those in attendance expressed extreme satisfaction with The Clan's platform. "I was leaning towards Howard Dean, but let me tell you something," stated Bob Kaupus, who could barely get through the crowded room to claim his third drink. "Those guys in C Mac P rock hard, and their barbaric yawps are much, much better than his."

The band continues their campaign this Saturday, January 31st, at Pete's 881, located at 721 Lincoln in San Rafael. Doors open at 8:30; cover is $5.

Having received their official endorsement, the band will be appearing
with incumbent 80's hairband tributary TEEZE, and will be premiering new material despite the fact that they don't yet have a harmonica with which to play the opening melody of "Peter Pumpkinhead."

"They definitely expect to have it by the weekend," said a Clan MacPartridge spokesperson. "Besides, the American people are a decent, understanding bunch. Given the group's stellar record on foreign policy and the economy, are they really going to let something like a potentially absent harmonica part determine their vote?"

When asked his thoughts on the group and whether The Clan's strong
grassroots following could jeopardize his current lead in the polls,
front-runner John Kerry nervously referred to the band's oft-cited mantra before leaving for an unspecified event.

"What can I say? They're not the best band in the world, but they play
their music. We're definitely on our toes, but we're not giving up."

Now That's What I Call A Charity Album
Date: 01/11/03

'The Wish List', Steve Somerset's ten track charity album for the MS Society is now available. Featuring Stephen Duffy and Lilac Time, Justin Hayward,Peter Blegvad, Phil Thornalley, Harold Budd, Steve Hogarth and the H-Band,Martin Newell, Steve's own band The Shadow Kabinet and of course the welcome return of The Dukes Of Stratosphear.

"It was a bit of coup to get all the Dukes back together for this,"
explains Steve.

I'd called Andy at the beginning of the year and he agreed to contribute something to the project but as to what, he wasn't sure. We kicked around a few ideas but nothing seemed to gel. Some weeks later I bumped into actor, and fellow Camden resident, Stephen Mackintosh (Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and a host of other stuff), we were talking about what we were up to and I mentioned the charity album and Andy's involvement. Stephen then proceeded to tell me how he had got into XTC via the Dukes. I relayed this story back to Andy who immediately said "Let's do a Dukes track". Earlier that week I'd been speaking to Dave Gregory and he told me about a Coral Sitar Guitar he'd just added to his armoury. The timing was perfect;Lord Cornelius Plum and Electric Sitar! We just needed a yes from Colin and Ian which followed swiftly and before you say 'Where the tin opener?' a can of human beans was being cooked up for your delight and a very good cause.

Steve says, "Forget all the speculation about who didn't record with who, The Dukes Of Stratosphear are back and you're in for a treat!"

'Open A Can (Of Human Beans)' kicks off the album which features some great songs, eight of which are totally exclusive to this album. Dave Gregory should also be mentioned in despatches for appearing on three tracks. He's playing electric sitar and mellotron with The Dukes, guitar with the The H-band and arranging and playing on 'It's Alright' by the Shadow Kabinet.

This is going to be a limited release so don't hang around!
