It doesn't have to be your favorite, but when you saw the posting title, what Colin or Andy line did you think of?
For some reason I get:
Shilling for the fellow who brings the sheep in...
Shilling for the fellow who milks the herd...

Re: outstanding line from an XTC song...
Mon, August 23, 2004 - 2:29 PMSo many XTC lines benefit from context. So I'd have to quote a whole stanza. But one I can think of that is great just by itself (even though it's better in context) is:
I would have made this instrumental but the words got in the way. -

Re: outstanding line from an XTC song...
Mon, August 23, 2004 - 3:29 PMJust so! More! I require more lyric quotes! Stanzas whole, even!

Re: outstanding line from an XTC song...
Sun, January 1, 2006 - 6:39 PMSkylarking is my all time favorite album...most of the memorable lines I've held near and dear to my heart are from there...one song in particular made an impact (both musically and lyrically)...The following line is from 1000 Umbrellas:
"And just when I thought that my vista was golden in hue, 1000 umbrellas opened to spoil the view."
Just sorta sums up "those" kinds of moments in life...

Re: outstanding line from an XTC song...
Tue, August 24, 2004 - 9:54 AMDespite Colin's worthy contributions to XTC's list of radio hits, I think "Dying" is one of the best songs he's ever written:
It frightens me when you come to mind
The day you dropped in the shopping line
And my heart beats faster when I think of all the signs
When they carried you out your mouth was open wide
The cat went astray and the dog did pine for days and days
And we felt so guilty when we played you up
When you were ill, so ill
What sticks in my mind is the sweet jar
On the sideboard. And your multicolored tea cosy
What sticks in my mind is the dew-drop hanging off your nose
Shrivelled up and blue
And I'm getting older, too
But I don't want to die like you
Don't want to die like you

Tue, February 15, 2005 - 10:27 PMI'm soaring over hushed crowds,
The reluctant cannonball it seems.
I'm soaring over hushed crowds,
I'm propelled up here by long dead dreams.
Still I'm getting higher,
Icarus regrets and retires puzzled.
(especially that last line)

Wed, February 16, 2005 - 11:55 AMAwaken you dreamers
Adrift in your beds
Balloons and streamers
Decorate the inside of your heads
Please let some out
Do it today
But don't let the loveless ones sell you a
World wrapped in gray -

Re: outstanding line from an XTC song...
Thu, February 17, 2005 - 9:54 AMThe line that makes me laugh is:
I wouldn't Hector if you'd be Helen of Troy
And from the same song
Really high, really high, like a real high thing, say a sunflower.
Just the phrasing "like a real high thing" puts me in a Discworld frame of mind. -

Re: outstanding line from an XTC song...
Thu, February 17, 2005 - 10:28 AMHow's this for appropriate:
Here comes President Kill again
Surrounded by all of his killing men
Telling us who why where and when
President Kill wants killing again
Hooray, ring out the bells
King Conscience is dead
Hooray, now back in your cells
we've President Kill instead
Here comes President Kill again
Broadcasting from his killing den
Dressed in pounds and dollars and yen
President Kill wants killing again -

Re: outstanding line from an XTC song...
Thu, February 17, 2005 - 3:50 PMThe thing with politicians is
I wouldn't have suspicions
If I saw their worst positions
And their Ugly Underneath
But after all the voting
Suck away the sugar coating
Now they've had you and they're gloating
Boy, it's Ugly Underneath! -

Re: outstanding line from an XTC song...
Tue, February 22, 2005 - 5:08 PMalienation:
They wanted tom
They wanted joe
To dress ’em up and stick ’em out on show

Pure genius! -

Sun, September 25, 2005 - 2:09 PM"I heard the neighbor slam his car door, don't he realize? This is Respectable Street."
Not neccessarily that great a line, but something made me think of it last night in which it was very applicable. -

Re: outstanding line from an XTC song...
Sun, September 25, 2005 - 3:50 PMAnd on that same damn song, Andy makes another rhyme less travelled:
Sunday church and they look fetching
Saturday night saw him retching

I'll just say forget her (or something worse.... starts with an F... ends with an IT...)
And carry on sweeping
up
Where I've been weeping
The jesters will creep in
to strike down the newly crowned monarch of MISERY oh howh MISERAAAAY
- 1000 Umbrellas (Easily the best "I'm so depressed because of love gone wrong" song EVER - musically and lyrically) -

Re: outstanding line from an XTC song...
Sat, December 9, 2006 - 3:54 PMI'm happy to see somebody appreciates that song as much as I do.
I also love this line from "Ladybird":

I crave your pardon if I woke you with my thinking

Fri, February 9, 2007 - 5:21 PMLie for a lie, but a truth for the truth
Give ’em back their house: the walls, the doors, the floors and roof
And stop tryin’ to diet on the wafers and wine and submit we’re in control
Now let’s put things right
Let’s multiply the loves and kisses
’til we have enough to love and eat forever
